The Best Secret Bars in Austin, Texas

In February of 2020, I ventured down to Austin, Texas for the 2020 IABC Leadership Institute. It was a WONDERFUL event and we met so many people from around the world.

When traveling, one of my favorite things to do is find at least one speakeasy! Lucky for me, Austin has several.

Floppy Disk Repair Co. or Red Headed Step-Child

While staying at the Westin Austin Downton, we heard from the restaurant bartender about the Floppy Disk Repair Co — which was conveniently right across the corner from us. The outside of this speakeasy says ‘Floppy Disk Repair Co.’ and typically has some riddle on the sign that is actually not related to the password. If it’s a busy night, a line or frequent in-and-out at the door gives this secret spot away. We actually visited two nights while in town.

To gain access, we went next-door and talked to the front security. We had heard if you tell him a joke or give them a tip, they will give you the code. Our door guy noticed our out-of-state ID’s, so we lucked out with the code pretty quickly.

After popping back next door and entering the code on the key-pad, you’re quickly engulfed in 50 Shades feeling. From the swings at the bar to provocatively named menu items, it has an overall seedy feel without being too sketchy. The crowd was typically younger and more edgy. Our drinks were good, and out waitress was helpful furthering our Speakeasy quest. The bar was very small, so either there wasn’t a ton going on or too much going on.

Firehouse Hostel

If you’re looking for an authentic speakeasy mixed with Harry Potter vibes, Firehouse delivers. This secret bar is located in the bottom of a functioning hostel, which does add to its charm — although I’m not sure how the guests feel.

To access this speakeasy, you walk past the people at the front desk and to the book case on the right. We gave them a wink, so they don’t laugh while you awkwardly try to figure out the secret door for your first time. Pro tip: It’s left to right.

Behind the bookcase, you’ll step down into a larger room with the bar to your right. They typically have live music, which was great. The patrons here are mostly college-age and on the edgier side. Seating is sparse, and standing room can get tight. It was crowded when we went, but still a great time overall.

The Garage

I heard it was Drake’s favorite, so of course we had to stop by and of course, this speakeasy was definitely one of my favorites. What’s cooler than a bar in an old valet quarters inside of a parking garage?

The Garage was sexy, offering a surprisingly warm and intimate vibe inside its stone walls.

The cocktails here are craft-made, and the capacity is limited so it’s not crowded inside. My only complaint was the interesting choice of music, which I only recall was strange.

Small Victory

108 E. 7th St. |smallvictory.bar

Small Victory is also in a parking garage building. My brother who lived in Austin for years never new this place existed, and had even seen the red V while walking downtown. We pressed the button on the call box and were buzzed in.

A long, elegant bar with a wall of booths opposite was the majority of the space. It was busy, but still enjoyable.

The crowd here was later 20s, early 30s with a mix of some older folks in there. The drinks were craft and on the pricer side, but strong and good. We didn’t stay here all too long, as we had reservations at the next stop.

Here Nor There

Here Nor There was my personal favorite, and our last speakeasy visit while in Austin this time. It was also the most ‘difficult’ to get in because you must make reservations ahead of time by downloading their app. They will send you the address and the access code shortly before your reservation.

Down a gated alley outside of a cool mural, you meet the door guy at the top of the stairs. After you’re called in, you walk down the steps and into a dark, sexy room with a massive stuffed bear. You’re greeted by your hosts, who offer you welcoming drinks. After, you enter another dark room with alcoved areas for seating. The ceiling is illuminated by star-like lighting that feels like you’re in a magical forest.

Here Nor There is romantic, cozy and intriguing. The drinks are impressive, some are even lit on fire, others come with branded ice cubes. All are delicious, and pricey, but worth the experience.

All in all, Austin had the most secret bars of the all the places we’ve traveled to so far!
